Free English Language British Parliamentary Debate Events in Beijing, Fall 2007

There are no registration fees for these activities
The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) will sponsor two free BP (different from American Parliamentary Style) activities.
The host school is Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU).

FREE TRAINING: November 2-4, 2007
International Trainers from Europe, the United States, and S. Korea will provide free British Parliamentary Debate training for university students and instructors
No experience necessary
All classes will be in English, so participants should have conversational skills
Participants must pay their own cost of transportation, lodging and meals.
Training will provide students with all of the information students needed to compete in the British Parliamentary debate style
Special training for instructors and graduate students

Debate is an excellent way for students to develop their oral English skills, so teachers are encouraged to receive training in how to conduct and evaluate debates. The three-hour judge training will be on Saturday afternoon and repeated on Sunday morning.

All training will be on the East campus of BFSU

November 2 – 1pm – 5pm

November 3 – 9am – noon, 2-5pm

November 4 – 9am – noon

FREE TOURNAMENT: December 7-9, 2007
An International BP Tournament at BFSU will use the style and topics discussed in the November training. IDEA will sponsor the entry fees for all debate teams. Schools must provide adjudicators to cover their judging commitment (1 adjudicator per two teams). Teams must pay their own cost of transportation, lodging and meals.
There will be limited space at both events, so the organizers reserve the right to restrict the amount of participants any one school can provide.

3:00pm – Awards

A list of hotels will be provided to all out of town schools. But teams are responsible for their own reservations and costs.

Warm-up tournament November 25, 2007
A ONE-DAY BP style tournament will be hosted by Capital Normal University. This tournament will have four BP rounds on Sunday. There will be no entry fee, but teams must provide a judge (1 adjudicator for each four teams). This tournament provides an opportunity to practice debating skills before the IDEA/FLTRP tournament in December.

We will have separate awards for experienced and beginning debaters.
